Some examples of the sustainability awards, ratings and recognitions H&M Group have received.
Dow Jones Sustainability Index
We remained in the Dow Jones European and World Sustainability Indexes for the 12th year running in 2023, scoring 58/100. We achieved best-in-class scores in several areas including human rights, climate strategy, greenhouse gas emissions, and materiality, where we received 100 out of 100 possible points for our detailed disclosures. Only four retailing companies made it into the European index and nine into the World index.
Textile Exchange Material Change Index
We scored second highest among 130 brands in Textile Exchange’s 2023 Material Change Index, an industry ranking that tracks progress towards more sustainable sourcing. In addition we were one of six brands that were ranked as leading transformational change.
Stand.earth Fashion Scorecard
In 2023, Stand.earth put us at the top of their Fossil Free Fashion Scorecard. The report rates fashion brands in five areas – commitments and transparency, renewable energy, low carbon materials, shipping, and advocacy. Overall, we achieved B-, the highest out of all the 43 brands included.
Fashion Revolution Fashion Transparency Index
In the 2023 Fashion Transparency Index, we scored 71% (66% in 2022) putting us in 6th place out of the 250 companies reviewed. The index is created annually by Fashion Revolution to hold top fashion brands accountable and encourage greater transparency. We’re pleased to have been recognised for our efforts, but know we still have more to do in this area.
Business of Fashion Sustainability Index
Business of Fashion placed us in fourth position in their 2022 Sustainability Index, scoring five points more than last year. We ranked first for waste, joint second for materials, and joint third for workers’ rights.
CDP
In 2022, CDP scored us A- for climate e and B- for water. Our forest score increased to B- for cattle products, B for timber, and C for palm oil.
Platform Living Wage Financials Annual Report
In their 2022 report, Platform Living Wage Financial (PLWF) assessed our work on wages in the supply chain as “advanced” for the second year running. Out of the 34 garment companies included in the report, only two received “advanced”, the second highest category. PLWF is an alliance of 19 financial institutions that monitors and encourages companies to address the non-payment of living wages in global supply chains.
Corporate Responsibility Reporting Awards
In the 2022 Corporate Responsibility Reporting Awards we were recognised in several categories for our 2020 sustainability report. We received second runner-up for the best report, winner for relevance and materiality, first runner-up for the best carbon disclosure report, second runner-up for creativity in communications and fourth runner-up for openness and honesty.
Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Brands to Zero assessment.
In 2022, we were one of eight brands awarded Aspirational Level for our leadership in implementation of chemical management in our supply chain by ZDHC.
FTSE4GOOD
We were featured in FTSE4Good Index Series, which helps investors identify companies demonstrating strong environmental, social and governance standards.
Ecogain Biodiversity Index
We were one of five companies awarded the Green Traffic Light for aligning our biodiversity goals with science in the Ecogain Biodiversity Index in 2021.
InfluenceMap's A-List of Climate Policy Engagement
We were identified as one of 15 corporate leaders advocating for ambitious climate policy in the 2021 A-List of Climate Policy Engagement.
Remake's Fashion Accountability Report
H&M Group ranked 11 in Remake’s 2021 Fashion Accountability Report that rates 60 fashion companies according to transparency, climate, diversity and inclusion.
Baptist Aid's World Ethical Fashion Report
Each year Baptist World Aid Australia publishes its Ethical Fashion Guide to help consumers choose brands that put people and planet before profit. In 2021, H&M Group was awarded an A grade, putting us in the top 20% of brands surveyed.
United Nationals Global Compact LEAD
H&M Group was named one of 37 Global Compact LEADs by the United Nations (UN) in 2021. The Global Compact brings together the UN and businesses to work towards universally accepted principals on human rights, labour, environment and anticorruption, and the Sustainable Development Goals. Companies named as Global Compact LEADs represent the highest level of engagement with the UN Global Compact.
